Birmingham-based Regions Bank is planning a major expansion of its retail footprint, with plans to open up to 150 new branches across its 15-state service area over the next five years. At the same time, the company intends to consolidate a similar number of older locations as part of its long-term strategy.
Expansion Strategy and Branch Growth
Regions Financial Corp. CEO John Turner shared the update during an investor and analyst conference in March 2026. The company expects to build between 135 and 150 branches, accelerating its original timeline and potentially adjusting further depending on land availability.
Turner noted that branches remain an important part of the bank’s customer experience, especially for individuals seeking guidance, problem-solving, and in-person support. The strategy reflects Regions’ continued emphasis on maintaining physical locations as a key connection to its brand.
Consolidation and Market Optimization
Alongside new construction, Regions plans to close or combine certain existing branches. In some markets, multiple locations may be consolidated into a single branch to better align with population trends, small business activity, and operational efficiency. Renovations are also expected across most existing branches to modernize facilities and improve customer experience.
Company leadership indicated that expanding within markets where Regions already has an established presence tends to be more cost-effective and profitable compared to entering entirely new regions.
Key Markets and Investment Focus
Regions expects the most significant growth in cities including Miami, Atlanta, Houston, Memphis, and Nashville. Planned expansion includes approximately 16 to 20 new branches in Florida, up to 10 in the Atlanta metro area, and 12 to 16 across Tennessee.
The company also continues to invest in personnel, technology, and internal processes to support long-term stability and consistent performance across its network.
