$22M expansion to double capacity at Hoover’s Cyber-Forensics Institute

The National Computer Forensics Institute (NCFI) in Hoover has started a $22 million expansion project that will strengthen its role as a national leader in cybercrime and digital forensics training. The project is scheduled for completion in summer 2027.

Expanding Facilities and Capabilities

When construction finishes, the institute will grow by 37,000 square feet. The new wing will include three classrooms for 35 students each, a 250-seat auditorium, and 20 new offices with shared spaces. With these additions, NCFI will train up to 8,000 students each year, more than doubling its current capacity.

National Training Hub for Cybercrime Investigations

Founded in 2008, NCFI represents a partnership between the U.S. Secret Service and the State of Alabama. The institute trains local, state, tribal, and federal law enforcement officers, as well as prosecutors and judges, to investigate cyber and electronic crimes. During one- to five-week courses in Hoover, participants learn advanced digital forensics techniques and hands-on investigative tools.

The American Council on Education notes that NCFI’s mission focuses on preparing public safety professionals to handle rapidly changing cyber threats.

Economic and Community Impact

The City of Hoover broke ground on the expansion on October 14 at the Hoover Public Safety Center, where NCFI operates. Earlier this year, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security awarded the city a $22 million grant to fund the project. In August, city officials selected M.J. Harris Construction Service as the general contractor.

Moreover, NCFI continues to boost Hoover’s economy. The institute generates about $7.5 million each year through travel, lodging, and local spending from visiting trainees. As a result, the expansion will not only enhance the institute’s training capacity but also create additional economic benefits for the region.

With this project, Hoover aims to strengthen its position as a national center for cybersecurity education and innovation. The expanded institute will help law enforcement agencies nationwide stay ahead of emerging cybercrime threats.
