A long-vacant historic Birmingham storefront is being transformed into a stylish Japanese-inspired night spot set to open this spring.
A New Concept in a Landmark Five Points South Building
According to online reports, The Sakéroom is preparing to launch inside the Shepherd-Sloss Building at 2007 Highland Avenue, a property best known for its iconic Barber’s sign and decades of nightlife history. The project brings new energy to one of Birmingham’s most recognizable corners in Five Points South.
Owner Paige Depperschmidt, a Birmingham entrepreneur with two prior restaurant concepts under her belt, is leading the vision. The space is being designed as a blend of modern Japanese aesthetics and elevated lounge atmosphere, with thoughtful lighting, curated art and intentional details meant to create a sensory, high-energy environment.
What to Expect From The Sakéroom
The new spot will focus on sushi rolls, small plates and shareable dishes, offering a menu that mixes refined preparation with seasonal ingredients. Plans also include specialty cocktails featuring saké, Japanese spirits and Asian-inspired flavors. Weekly themed nights, collaborations with local creatives and rotating chef specials are part of the early programming lineup, according to online reports.
Interior design is being led by Lele Brown of JBG, who is shaping the space around a moody, contemporary Japanese influence.
Reviving a Storied Corner of Birmingham
The Shepherd-Sloss building has been home to several well-known nightspots over the decades, and the new project marks the first major activation of the storefront in years. With The Sakéroom, the Five Points South district gains a fresh concept that pairs dining, nightlife and cultural inspiration at a site already woven into Birmingham’s entertainment history.
