Historic buildings in Five Points South that stood for more than a century are set to be demolished following a massive fire that tore through the property last year.
Century-old buildings lost after fire
The fire destroyed structures along 20th Street South that once housed apartments and businesses in Five Points South. First responders battled the blaze for days, leaving behind heavily damaged buildings that had long been part of the neighborhood’s identity.
Now, the property owner has decided to move forward with demolition, marking the end of an era for the historic district.
A staple of Southside history
Rick Ranelli of Ranelli’s said the buildings across the street had been a constant presence throughout his life and business career.
His family opened the restaurant decades ago, and he recalls generations of residents and customers who lived in the apartments above the storefronts.
He described arriving at work on Halloween morning to find streets blocked off as firefighters worked to contain the blaze. Businesses nearby opened their doors to assist first responders and displaced residents during the emergency.
Demolition ahead as investigation continues
In the months since the fire, neighbors had hoped at least part of the historic façade might be preserved. However, officials have indicated the damaged structures will be torn down.
The loss has been difficult for longtime residents and business owners who viewed the buildings as part of the fabric of Five Points South. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
