Six Birmingham-area public schools ranked among Alabama’s top 10 in the latest U.S. News & World Report rankings.
Birmingham Metro Places Six Schools in Top 10
The 2026-27 U.S. News Best High Schools rankings highlight strong results across the Birmingham metro. In fact, six local schools made Alabama’s top 10.
Homewood High School earned the No. 2 spot statewide. Mountain Brook High School followed at No. 3. Meanwhile, Vestavia Hills High School ranked fourth.
Hewitt-Trussville High School also made the top five. It ranked No. 5 in Alabama. Spain Park High School came in at No. 7. Oak Mountain High School rounded out the Birmingham-area schools in the top 10 at No. 8.
Huntsville’s New Century Tech Demo High School took the No. 1 spot in Alabama.
How Birmingham Schools Ranked
Homewood High School placed No. 212 nationally. Mountain Brook High School followed at No. 215. Vestavia Hills ranked No. 533 nationwide.
Hewitt-Trussville came in at No. 679 nationally. Spain Park ranked No. 782. Oak Mountain placed No. 818.
Other Birmingham-area schools also earned strong statewide rankings. Hoover High School ranked No. 16. Springville followed at No. 22. Chelsea came in at No. 24.
Thompson ranked No. 26 statewide. Helena placed No. 36. Pelham came in at No. 38. Ramsay High School ranked No. 39.
What U.S. News Considers
U.S. News reviewed more than 27,000 public schools for this year’s rankings. Nearly 18,000 schools received a ranking.
The evaluation uses several academic measures. These include college readiness and state assessment results. It also considers graduation rates and college curriculum breadth.
In addition, the rankings examine performance among underserved students. Together, these factors help determine each school’s position in the state and national rankings.
The results offer Birmingham families another way to compare local schools. They also highlight the strong academic performance found across the metro area.
