The leader of Birmingham City Schools has earned statewide recognition for his leadership and student achievement gains.
Mark Sullivan named Outstanding Superintendent
Mark Sullivan, superintendent of Birmingham City Schools, received the Outstanding Superintendent of the Year award from the Alabama Education Association. His peers selected him for the honor.
The award recognizes professional achievement, innovation, and leadership that strengthens public education. Sullivan has led the district since 2020 and has worked in the system for more than 25 years.
District posts academic gains under his leadership
Under Sullivan’s direction, Birmingham City Schools earned its highest grade ever on the state report card issued by the Alabama State Department of Education. Additionally, several schools improved test scores across multiple subjects in 2025.
The district also launched a comprehensive academic improvement plan. Leaders focused on early literacy, stronger instructional support, and expanded college and career pathways. As a result, more students now have access to postsecondary opportunities and workforce preparation programs.
Board praises performance and renews contract
In October, the Birmingham Board of Education evaluated Sullivan’s performance. Board members tied the review closely to student outcomes and overall district health. They awarded him an overall score of 3.3 on a four-point scale.
Earlier, the board approved a three-year contract renewal and nearly $25,000 pay raise. Board President Sherman Collins praised Sullivan’s leadership and credited him with driving historic progress across the district.
