A new federal grant will help shape long-term public transit planning in the Birmingham region by supporting the Birmingham-Jefferson County Transit Authority with funding for research, analysis, and development strategy.
$1M federal grant supports BJCTA planning efforts
The Birmingham-Jefferson County Transit Authority received a $1 million award from the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Innovative Finance and Asset Concession Grant Program. The funding will provide technical assistance over the next three years.
It will help the agency study expansion options, financing strategies, and ways to improve long-term financial stability.
Focus on major transit hubs in Birmingham
The planning work will center on three key BJCTA properties: Central Station Transit Center, the Intermodal Administrative Building, and the CrossPlex West Transit Center.
Each site will be reviewed as part of a broader effort to understand demand, evaluate development potential, and identify improvements to transit service and infrastructure.
Community input and long-term goals
The project will move through several phases, including market analysis, technical evaluation, and public meetings. BJCTA leaders said the goal is to strengthen transit services while making better use of public assets.
Officials also emphasized that community feedback will help guide final recommendations.
