Nebius eyes major data center development in Birmingham

European cloud provider Nebius is targeting a major data center project in Birmingham, Alabama. The proposed development would repurpose a former corporate operations site in the Oxmoor area.

Nebius files plans for BHM01 in Oxmoor

Nebius has filed plans for a project known as BHM01 on roughly 80 acres in Birmingham’s Oxmoor corridor. The site includes property along Lakeshore Parkway in Jefferson County.

Reports indicate the company is targeting up to 300 megawatts of capacity. If completed, the facility would rank among the region’s largest data center developments. However, full project details have not yet been released.

Former Regions site set for redevelopment

An affiliate, Alabama ADC Holdings LLC, acquired 201, 250, and 260 Milan Parkway and 2500 Venice Road for about $90 million. The sellers included University of Alabama at Birmingham, Regions Bank, and U.S. Steel.

The purchase includes the former Regions Lakeshore Operations Center at 201 Milan Parkway. Developers plan to demolish the existing building and construct a new data center facility.

In addition, an affiliate of Raeden is reportedly involved in the 201 Milan transaction. Raeden also purchased nearby property at 2500 Milan Court last year, signaling broader interest in the corridor.

Expansion comes amid local scrutiny

Birmingham officials are currently weighing a potential moratorium on new data centers. The discussion follows public backlash over proposals for a large project in nearby Bessemer. As a result, the timing of new approvals could face added scrutiny.

Nebius, which spun out of Yandex in 2024, focuses on AI cloud workloads. The Nasdaq-listed firm provides GPU capacity across the U.S., Europe, and the Middle East. Notably, customers include Microsoft and Meta.

The company aims to secure 2.5 gigawatts of contracted capacity by the end of 2026. Therefore, the Birmingham project could play a key role in its North American growth strategy.
