Primer relocates to bigger campus as enrollment grows in Birmingham

Primer, a private K–12 school in Birmingham, has relocated to a larger permanent space after rapid enrollment growth since its launch.

From Startup Campus to Full-Time Location

Primer opened in Birmingham last year and initially operated out of Miles College. The school has now moved into a full-time campus at Holy Family Cristo Rey High School. School leaders said the move allows them to better serve a growing student population across the region.

Interest in the school’s model continues to rise across Birmingham and other parts of Alabama. As demand increased, the organization needed additional space to support more students and expanded programming.

Growing Demand for Flexible Learning Models

School representatives pointed to rising interest in alternative education options. Applications tied to Alabama’s CHOOSE Act increased by 33% this year, reflecting broader demand for school choice programs that help families access private education options.

A Birmingham parent described positive changes seen in her child, noting improved confidence and enthusiasm for reading after enrolling. The parent said the school’s approach helped her child move from struggling with reading to enjoying daily learning experiences.

How Primer’s Classroom Model Works

Primer uses a K–8 classroom structure that groups multiple grade levels together. This setup allows younger students to learn alongside older peers in a mentor-style environment.

The school divides the day into two learning blocks. Students focus on core academic subjects in the morning. Afternoons center on hands-on, project-based learning activities.

School leadership said the model supports students at different learning levels within the same classroom. Teachers adjust instruction so advanced students stay challenged while others receive additional support without falling behind.

Primer now operates multiple campuses across Alabama, including locations in Huntsville, Montgomery, Dothan, and Mobile, as well as additional sites nationwide.
