A Birmingham women’s health practice is expanding the role of routine mammograms by introducing a new program that helps identify early signs of cardiovascular risk while screening for breast health.
New program adds heart risk insights to routine mammograms
Birmingham OB/Gyn has launched “Mammo with Heart,” a screening initiative developed in partnership with Onsite Women’s Health.
The program uses FDA-cleared artificial intelligence technology to analyze routine mammography images for breast arterial calcifications, a marker that research has linked to potential heart disease risk. The screening does not require additional imaging, radiation, or separate appointments.
Focus on early detection and preventive care
Heart disease remains the leading cause of death among women in Central Alabama, and the program aims to improve early detection by using existing mammogram data to identify patients who may benefit from further cardiovascular evaluation.
Providers can use the results to start earlier conversations about prevention and risk management.
Coordinated care with cardiovascular specialists
Birmingham OB/Gyn is also working with Alabama Cardiovascular Group to build a referral pathway for patients who show elevated risk indicators.
The goal is to connect women with timely specialist care when needed and support more coordinated preventive treatment across providers.
