The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) has earned national recognition for its ability to transform scientific research into practical healthcare innovations that reach patients and communities.
UAB ranks 42nd in national innovation index
UAB placed 42nd out of 303 leading biomedical research institutions in the inaugural 2026 Cure Innovation Index. The ranking evaluated universities and research institutes on their ability to move discoveries from the lab into real-world applications.
UAB also ranked among the top five public universities in the Southeast and stood out as the only public institution in the Deep South within the top 50.
Strong focus on commercialization and startups
The report highlighted UAB’s strength in turning research into market-ready solutions. The university’s Bill L. Harbert Institute for Innovation and Entrepreneurship has helped launch more than 20 startups over the past five years.
Programs like the Blazer Bridge Fund and Blazer App Accelerator have supported early-stage funding, mentorship, and product development for researchers and entrepreneurs.
Leadership highlights impact on patient care
UAB leaders said the ranking reflects the university’s focus on improving lives through innovation.
Officials emphasized that research efforts are not limited to academic discovery but are actively translated into medical tools, treatments, and technologies that benefit patients beyond the campus.
