Birmingham filmmaker teases new revolutionary war movie sequel

Birmingham native Jon Erwin is creating a sequel to his historical film “Young Washington” after the movie became a box office success during its opening weekend.

Sequel Will Explore Washington’s Revolutionary War Years

Erwin announced that he has started writing the follow-up film while visiting George Washington’s Mount Vernon home. The next movie will focus on the year 1776 and continue the story of Washington’s journey toward becoming a national leader.

The director said audiences have frequently asked whether the film would receive a sequel. In response, Erwin confirmed that another Revolutionary War epic is already in development.

The upcoming film will expand on the events after “Young Washington,” which focused on Washington’s early life and the challenges that shaped his future.

‘Young Washington’ Finds Success in Theaters

The original film earned $20.8 million during the Independence Day weekend from July 3-5, 2026. The movie ranked third at the box office behind major franchise releases.

“Young Washington” follows a 22-year-old George Washington as he faces the consequences of a mistake that helps trigger the French and Indian War. The story explores his early struggles and the experiences that prepared him for leadership.

The film’s release also marked the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, making its debut especially meaningful for audiences interested in American history.

Birmingham Filmmaker Continues Historical Storytelling

Erwin directed and co-wrote “Young Washington” while also serving as a producer. He is known for creating the Prime Video series “House of David” and founding the Wonder Project.

Angel Studios distributes the film worldwide. The cast includes William Franklyn-Miller as young George Washington, Mary-Louise Parker as Mary Washington, Sir Ben Kingsley as Robert Dinwiddie, Andy Serkis as General Edward Braddock, Joel David Smallbone as William Fairfax, and Kelsey Grammer as Lord Fairfax.

Erwin has not announced casting details for the sequel. However, he said the next chapter will continue exploring Washington’s life and legacy with an even larger historical story.
