The Broken Knife has officially returned with a new home at Elysian Gardens, bringing its chef-inspired sandwiches back to Birmingham.
Beloved Sandwich Shop Starts a New Chapter
After closing its Homewood restaurant, The Broken Knife has reopened at Elysian Gardens, located at 101 40th Street South in Avondale.
The restaurant paused its brick-and-mortar operations following the passing of chef Bucky Davis in June 2025. While the physical location closed, the business continued serving customers through its catering operation. The new Avondale location marks the restaurant’s return to in-person dining.
Bold Sandwiches Return to the Menu
Known for its chef-driven approach, The Broken Knife serves specialty sandwiches made with house-smoked meats, scratch-made sauces, and artisan bread.
The restaurant is gradually introducing its new menu, with sandwiches available from its kitchen across from the stage at Elysian Gardens. The menu focuses on hearty lunch options designed for both dine-in and takeout customers.
In addition to daily service, The Broken Knife continues to offer catering for office lunches, meetings, private events, and other gatherings.
