Two Alabama VA facilities are participating in a clinical trial examining whether psilocybin could help veterans with depression that has not responded to standard treatments.
Birmingham and Tuscaloosa VA Sites Join Study
The Birmingham and Tuscaloosa VA facilities are among five locations taking part in the clinical trial.
Researchers will study psilocybin, a psychedelic compound found in certain mushrooms, as a potential treatment for veterans with treatment-resistant depression. Some participants will also have PTSD.
Treatments Will Take Place in Controlled Settings
The study will administer psilocybin in controlled clinical environments. Participants will also receive psychological support as part of the treatment process.
Researchers will use the trial to evaluate whether the approach could provide another option for veterans who have not found relief through existing treatments.
What the Study Could Mean for Veterans
The trial adds to ongoing research into new approaches for difficult-to-treat depression among veterans.
However, the study is still evaluating the treatment’s effectiveness and safety. Psilocybin remains an investigational treatment in this setting, so the trial’s findings will help determine its potential role in future care.
