A scaled-back Samford University housing proposal has received unanimous support from the Homewood Planning Commission and will now move to the city council.
New Housing Could Serve Nearly 500 Students
The proposal calls for two six-story buildings on the south side of Lakeshore Drive, near Samford’s existing track and soccer field.
The development could provide housing for up to 494 students. It would also include about 9,250 square feet of retail space and additional parking.
The project focuses primarily on student housing and represents a smaller plan than Samford’s previous proposal.
New Plan Avoids Sensitive Habitat
Samford withdrew an earlier development proposal in 2025 after concerns arose about sensitive salamander habitat near the site.
The university’s new plan takes a different approach. It moves the proposed development away from the area’s known salamander habitat and places a greater focus on housing.
Samford representatives said the revised design came after conversations with Homewood residents, city officials, and environmental experts. The university also said it plans to work with partners on restoring natural habitats.
Residents Raise Environmental and Traffic Concerns
While the commission supported the proposal, some residents voiced concerns during the public comment period.
Stormwater runoff, traffic along Lakeshore Drive, and potential effects on Shades Creek and the Greenway were among the issues raised.
Residents also suggested ways to make the project more environmentally friendly. Ideas included planting additional trees, using permeable surfaces for parking, and adopting sustainable building practices.
After hearing public comments and discussing the proposal, the Planning Commission voted 7-0 to recommend approval.
The proposal will now go before the Homewood City Council. A vote could take place this fall, with October currently expected as the likely timeframe.
