$9.2M remodel brings veterans housing to Birmingham

A former Birmingham hotel near U.S. 280 is being transformed into housing for veterans following a major renovation project led by the Tunnel to Towers Foundation.

$9.2 Million Renovation Underway

The former Spark by Hilton Birmingham Colonnade at 4300 Colonnade Parkway is receiving a $9.2 million remodel as part of its conversion into a veterans housing community.

Tunnel to Towers purchased the 122-room hotel in 2025 for $11 million. The nonprofit began construction later that year with plans to create Birmingham Veteran Village, a residential community designed to provide stable housing and support services for veterans.

The renovated property will include approximately 110 housing units when completed. Officials expect the project to finish in 2027.

Support Services Planned for Veterans

The Birmingham Veteran Village project will provide more than housing. Residents will have access to services designed to support long-term stability and independence.

Planned resources include employment assistance, job training, education support, mental health and PTSD counseling, addiction recovery programs, medical care access, and guidance with Veterans Affairs benefits.

Tunnel to Towers representatives said the project aims to provide veterans with a safe and supportive place to live while helping them access resources that improve their quality of life.

Expanding the Mission in Birmingham

The Tunnel to Towers Foundation created Birmingham Veteran Village as part of its broader mission to support veterans and first responders. The organization provides housing assistance, including specially adapted homes for injured veterans and first responders.

The Birmingham project represents a significant investment in services for local veterans. Once complete, the renovated property will offer a new resource for veterans seeking housing and additional support in the Birmingham area.
