Birmingham leaders have approved a $45 million investment to expand career education, improve school facilities, and create new opportunities for students.
New Career Center to Prepare Students for High-Demand Jobs
The largest share of the funding, $40 million, will support construction of the Future Ready Career and Innovation Center at the former Arthur School site. City officials expect the workforce training campus to open in fall 2029.
Initially, the center will focus on health sciences. Students will have access to training in nursing, licensed practical nursing, patient care, physical therapy, medical assisting, sterile processing, and radiologic technology. As the project grows, officials plan to introduce additional career pathways.
More Career and Financial Education Opportunities
Future phases of the center will add programs in electrical work, HVAC, welding, plumbing, cybersecurity, information technology, automotive services, commercial driving, accounting, aviation maintenance, advanced manufacturing, education, and public safety.
In addition, the city will invest $1 million in the Junior Achievement Economic Education Center. The program will provide Birmingham students in grades 6 through 8 with hands-on lessons in entrepreneurship, financial literacy, business management, and civic leadership. As a result, about 3,200 Birmingham City Schools students are expected to participate each year.
School Improvements Across Birmingham
Beyond career education, the investment includes $4.1 million to renovate basketball courts at Birmingham elementary and middle schools. The city will also dedicate $60,000 to improve the playground at the James Rushton Early Learning Center.
Importantly, the funding will not come from Birmingham’s General Fund or operating budget. Instead, the city will use dedicated school capital funds generated through Jefferson County property tax revenue.
Overall, city leaders say the investment strengthens educational infrastructure while helping students prepare for college, military service, entrepreneurship, or high-wage careers after graduation.
