Birmingham-Southern finalizes $126.5M campus sale to U.S. Coast Guard

The former Birmingham-Southern College campus has officially been sold to the U.S. Coast Guard in a major redevelopment deal.

Major Federal Purchase Completed

The 192-acre Birmingham campus on the city’s west side has been sold for $126.5 million. The agreement was finalized between Birmingham-Southern College and the U.S. Coast Guard. An independent appraisal set the purchase price to meet federal fair-market requirements.

The sale marks the end of a long transition for the historic college, which closed in 2024 after 168 years of operation. School leaders said the proceeds will help rebuild the institution’s endowment, which declined during years of financial challenges.

New Training Center Planned for West Birmingham

The Coast Guard plans to transform the site into Training Center Birmingham-Southern. The facility will host thousands of enlisted personnel each year for short-term training programs lasting between two and twelve weeks. Instruction will focus on technical skills and professional development.

Around 300 Coast Guard employees and 100 civilian contractors are expected to staff the center. Officials also said the project supports a broader effort to expand the Coast Guard workforce nationwide. The agency aims to add at least 15,000 members as part of its modernization strategy.

Local Impact and Community Response

City leaders and residents say the project could bring long-term benefits to Birmingham’s west side. Mayor Randall Woodfin described the investment as a major step toward economic growth and workforce development in surrounding neighborhoods, including Bush Hills and College Hills.

Local officials expect increased activity in the area as new workers arrive. Council representatives noted that nearby businesses may see higher demand for food, shopping, and daily services.

Community members living near the campus expressed cautious optimism. Many hope the redevelopment will reduce blight and encourage further investment in the surrounding area. The project is also expected to preserve the Birmingham-Southern name in recognition of the institution’s long history.
