Legacy Arena at the Birmingham-Jefferson Convention Complex (BJCC) is marking its 50th anniversary with a free, family-friendly community celebration that highlights its long history as one of Birmingham’s premier entertainment venues.
Free Anniversary Event Planned for July 11
The BJCC will host a free public event on Saturday, July 11 at Legacy Arena in downtown Birmingham. Festivities begin at 3 p.m. and are open to all ages, with free admission and free parking available for attendees.
The celebration will include interactive activities such as face painting, caricature artists, balloon artists, arcade-style games, and arena tours. Guests will also be able to explore behind-the-scenes areas and experience newly installed art exhibits honoring the venue’s 50-year history.
Live Entertainment and Family Activities
In addition to hands-on activities, the event will feature live entertainment and food trucks throughout the afternoon. Organizers plan to showcase the arena’s sports and concert legacy through themed experiences, including screen-printed anniversary merchandise and historical displays.
A special live performance by The Black Jacket Symphony is scheduled for 7 p.m., featuring music inspired by legendary artists who have performed at Legacy Arena over the decades.
A Landmark Venue in Birmingham History
Originally opened in 1976, Legacy Arena has hosted concerts, sporting events, and major touring productions for generations. The venue underwent a major modernization project in 2021 and continues to serve as a key entertainment hub in the Southeast.
Officials with the BJCC say the anniversary event celebrates both the arena’s past and its continued role in shaping Birmingham’s live entertainment scene. The celebration runs until 9:30 p.m. at 1898 9th Avenue North in Birmingham.
