Construction has begun on a new industrial facility in McCalla that will expand manufacturing capacity in the Birmingham metro area and create new employment opportunities in production and logistics roles.
ITU AbsorbTech Breaks Ground in Jefferson Metropolitan Park
Wisconsin-based ITU AbsorbTech has started work on a 50,000-square-foot processing facility located in Jefferson Metropolitan Park in McCalla. The company expects the project to be completed by July 2027 and says it will serve as its first Alabama operation.
The new factory will become the company’s sixth processing plant overall and is part of its broader expansion into the Southeast. Officials say the site will handle large-scale processing of reusable absorbents and industrial textiles.
New Facility Expected to Create 40 Local Jobs
Once operational, the McCalla plant is expected to create about 40 jobs across production, maintenance, route service, sales, and business development. Company leadership says the facility will help meet rising demand for its reusable shop towels and absorbent products used in industrial settings.
Executives also pointed to McCalla’s location, workforce availability, and regional access as key factors in choosing the site. The company plans to work with local schools and workforce programs to support hiring and training efforts.
Expansion Supports Regional Manufacturing Growth
ITU AbsorbTech produces launderable oil absorbents and shop towels used in industrial operations, and the new facility will significantly increase its processing capacity. Company leaders say the plant will support more sustainable manufacturing practices while serving customers across the region.
Once completed, the facility is expected to process millions of pounds of reusable materials each year, adding to the area’s growing industrial base and job market.
