A well-known Birmingham family has donated $10 million to the University of Alabama at Birmingham to support Alzheimer’s research, education, and patient care efforts aimed at advancing treatment and expanding clinical programs.
Major Gift Supports UAB Alzheimer’s Research and Care
The Gorrie family has contributed $10 million to UAB to strengthen its work in Alzheimer’s disease research and medical training. The funding will support expanded research programs, improved patient care, and increased educational opportunities for future specialists in the field.
UAB also announced that its Alzheimer’s Disease center will be named in honor of Frances Gorrie following approval from the University of Alabama System Board of Trustees. The center has operated since 1991 and focuses on research, education, community outreach, and patient services.
Expanding Research, Clinical Trials, and Medical Training
University officials say the donation will help accelerate scientific discovery and attract leading experts in Alzheimer’s research. It will also support additional clinical trials, expand fellowship programs, and create endowed faculty positions to strengthen long-term research capacity.
UAB currently conducts several Alzheimer’s-related clinical trials at any given time, and leaders expect the new funding to increase that number while improving access to experimental treatments and care options for patients across the region.
Addressing Alzheimer’s Impact in Alabama
The donation comes at a time when Alzheimer’s disease affects a significant portion of Alabama’s senior population, with the state ranking among the highest in the nation for Alzheimer’s-related deaths.
UAB leaders say the funding will help improve education and awareness while expanding access to care for families affected by the disease. The Gorrie family stated that the gift reflects a desire to support research that may lead to better treatments and future cures.
University officials described the contribution as a major step forward in advancing Alzheimer’s research and supporting patients and families throughout Alabama.
